I've been married for about 2 1/2 years. We are planning to travel to Jamaica this summer and I just pulled out my documents. My current driver's license has both my maiden and married last name. Do I need to update my permanent resident card with my last name? My originating country passport also has my maiden name. I've been calling the government office but no answer yet. I'm hoping since I still have my license and my plane ticket will have both my last names I don't have to change anything.
If anyone knows or has any info...thanks in advance! My permanent resident card and passport both have my maiden name. Luckily I haven't purchased my ticket yet so I can use only my maiden name if I needed. I thought of using both names hypenated when I purchased the ticket and bringing along my marriage certificate if needed. I will contact the airline to get some help. |

No you should have no problems traveling with your green card along with your passport and drivers license. I also have my maiden name only on the passport and green card but my license has both. I have traveled to Canada, Mexico and Japan over the last two years and have had no troubles.

I think you really need to update it. All your documents should be updated to your last name (your married name) Here is the website if you need it.
I traveled out of the states 6 months ago and I had the same problem. But the thing was I was going to be fined 5,000 dollars for not having the right name. Yes my flight was delayed 2 hrs because IMM had to talk to US consulate to let me through. I told them that I had no idea. I was with my baby so they couldn't keep me there. And didn't end up paying money. They gave me a warning though. |

Eventually you do have to update your name to how you would like it to be. But in this case, as far as travelling in near future is concerned, as long as your names on your passport, your Permanent Resident Card and your plane tickets are matching you should be able to travel in and out of the US without any problems. Driver's Licence has nothing to do with all this and is irrelevant. However you're saying that the name that appears on you plane ticket is not exactly the one you have on your relevant documents. There are 2 possible issues, one with the US Immigration Control and one with the airline company. As far as the immigration is concerned, you are in good shape, because you have your passport (which identifies you and your origins) and Permanent Residence Card (which is a document prooving you legal residence in the US and which enable to get back into the US), assuming that they are valid. It is the second issue that you might have problems with. The airline may not allow you to board with your plane ticket showing a different name from your documents. I don't know how far off your name on you plane ticket is, so I can't tell you whether it is OK. That is up to you to determine. But what I can say is that you shouldn't be calling these government agencies, it is the airline you should be calling. Depending on how far your name is off, you should try to have your name on you plane tickets changed and matched to the documents and not the other way around. Simply because it is a lot slower and difficult to have your name changed on both you PR Card and your Passport, than your plane ticket. Imagine the time, money and hassle that is involved with that and issuing you new documents. Airlines are businesses and they want your money, I am sure they will be able to provide a small service like adjusting your name. However, again, eventually, you do need to have your names matched on all your documents. Good Luck and have a nice trip.
In response to your additional detail: If you haven't bought your tickets, you have no problems. All you have to do is buy the tickets in the name that shows on your travel documents (Passport and PR Card). Why do you want to complicate things? It will won't serve any useful purpose in your travel, is it? In addition, what if you suffer from theft or a loss of belongings? You will lose all the documents you have, you will have nothing to prove your identity and permanent residence in the US. I strongly recommend that you keep it simple and leave unnecessary documents at home. |

As long as the names match on the tickets, passport and green card, you will be fine. Your driver's license really will be of no use when you travel abroad anyway. You will need to have a passport to board, so you can really leave the driver's license at home.
If you legally changed your name upon marriage, i.e. you indicated a name change on your marriage certificate, then you should really get a new passport and green card when you get back. |
