Depends on a number of circumstances..... 1) what the conviction was for 2) how long ago (although someone I know regularly gets questioned on a 35 year old offense, even with a clean record since) 3) What you are coming into the U.S. for and for how long 4) The mood of the customs officer (yeah ... seriously) Here is what I suggest. If you are eligible for a pardon in Canada, get it .. even though the U.S. doesn't recognize Canadian pardons, it can't hurt. Have all your paperwork (photo ID, birth certificate or passport,) ready, and know the answers to the commonly asked questions (where are you going, why, where are you staying - name of hotel, etc, when you are coming back) ... the more assured and confident you are the less likely you will be questioned further.
