Ghana is a beautiful place and not too hard to get to, but it can take a while, I prefer British Airways to get there, relatively speaking they are not too expensive and it's a direct as one can get. :) While Accra is nice, visiting smaller towns and villages is quite the experience and totally worth it! For the most part people in Ghana are very friendly and it's a pretty safe place, meaning you could stay in a boarding house or a non-Western hotel, etc. (keeping in mind there are bad people everywhere!) so you should be fine traveling outside of Accra. Find a tro-tro to anywhere really, it's so easy to get back to Accra. I totally recommend walking the rope bridge above the canopy at Kakum National Park, the slave forts in Cape Coast are sobering but worth experiencing, Tafe Atome Monkey Sanctuary is a cool experience as is Wli waterfall (the last two mentioned are on the opposite side of the country from CC, both near HoHoe- I think, but so cool!) The best experience will be meeting people and learning about the culture more so than seeing the sights! If you are considering going soon, Ghana's 50th anniversary is in March, it's sure to be an amazing celebration! Also, when people are selling water out of little bags, 'pure water' is typically safe, 'ice water' is NOT!
ENJOY!!
