HI
How much amount is allowed by customs to be carried while one is travelling from India to USA? Is there any limit to it(obviously there must be sth)? The State Bank of India officials say one can't carry more than $2000. Is this true? I want to know where can I convert the rupee to USD in India. SBI says they can convert a maximum of $2000. No cash beyond that. Over and above that limit they will issue a cash card. |

The limit for cash is $10,000 USD. You must declare on the customs form any amount above that when you arrive.
Information on customs here: http://www.cbp.gov/linkhandler/cgov/travel/clearing_goods/traveler_entry_form/cbp_traveler_brochure.ctt/cbp_traveler_brochure.pdf |

Into the US you can take ten thousand cash without declaring it. If you have more you must declare it or you go to jail. Just as they have xray machines at the airport they also have currency detector machines. So dont ever try getting past with more than the limit but respect the laws. I dont know India´s rules about how much you can take out.
