See my answer to LA. Every place is dangerous and yet, with the proper precautions, can be safely visited. Travel with a friend and be prepared. Check out the location of the things you want to visit and if they are in borderline areas, meaning they may have higher risks, then avoid them or go with a locally organized tour.

I've never been to LA but have been to NYC. Every town or city you go to will have it's good area's and bad area's. I don't know how long your gonna be in the US for but in my opinion do most of your sight seeing during the day and if you going to go out at night...make sure your in a well lite area. Make sure you have a cell phone or if you don't have a cell phone with you make sure you have a calling card or enough change to make a few phone calls. Make sure you know where you are staying and what there phone number is just in case you get lost and need to know how to get back.

I have traveled alone in the USA as a single female to NYC, Miami and Atlanta. Just do your homework, by checking as many websites as possible on where you are going, both official and unofficial websites. Which you should do even if you are traveling with a group. Take the precautions as if you were traveling anywhere. And purchase "a pay as you go cell phone" from walmart, target, cvs, Walgreen's etc or rent a phone and let someone know where you are going. You can get one for cheap $20US WITH $10 CREDIT-Cingular/AT&T worked best for me especially for international calls and save the hotels phone # in case you get lost they can direct you.
Read as many reviews as you can on hotels, attractions, shopping, tours etc. Follow your instincts they never fail you. Have fun and don't allow fear to rule your life. |
