Default Is a UK (photo-card) license an accepted form of ID when travelling in the USA?

Going to travel in the USA later this year, is a UK (photo-card) license a recognised form of ID when travelling in the USA? I know the passport is, but I'd rather not carry that around with me all the time.

As long as it is a government issued photo-ID card such as a drivers license then you will have very little trouble.

Take note however that such forms of ID do not have to be accepted as they are not legal proof in the United States, so some people may refuse them. I would take your passport with you just in case and even more so if you plan to out to the bars drinking.

Carrying your driving license and the passport with you -- which of course you will do -- should be all that is required. Since the passport is primarily an instrument of passage between countries and by extension expected to be honored by governments, private organizations are not required or can be expected to oblige -- which includes, supermarkets, local groceries, departmental stores, et. al.

It should be good enough in most places and will serve the purpose. However, just be aware that not all whom you might meet in a situation requiring your personal identification will be smart enough to understand that you are here for a short visit and therefore, really does not have a "US Govt Issued ID" and will simply not accept any other forms of ID. On the other hand, they may have strict policies/ rules/ instructions prohibiting them from accepting non US identifications.

What I think "MIGHT" work is to walk into a local DMV office (Department of Motor Vehicles) and request them for a US issued ID. They do issue such an ID -- which serves only as identification -- but I am not sure if foreign nationals on short visits will be issued one. In different states, different organizations handle such ID creation.
