Yes, it will be safe for the american in Rome, and yes it will be safe for the italian in Washington, DC.

Both places are larger cities an suffer from the tendency of petty criminals to prey upon tourists (after all if you come from another country it is that much harder to file a criminal complaint.) Because of that both people should be aware of what is going on around them, and might seek to take steps to protect their valuables with things like moneybelts and keeping wallets in non-accessible places and the like. This is a problem worldwide, in all cities - not specific to these places.

Both of you, have great trips! Both cities are wonderful places to visit!

As a chica with a taste for travel, often unaccompanied, the best advice I can offer is to be aware of your circumstances and your surroundings. Keep your head and don't put yourself in potentially risky or dangerous situations.

Rome, just like almost any other big city around the world has a fair amount of petty crime, such as pickpocketing. In general, travel safety is much the same anywhere. My best recommendations include:

- Keeping a low profile (looking and acting like you belong there), i.e. keep your camera in a bag when not in use, dress casual, not a whole lot of jewelery, etc.

- Paying attention (be aware of your surroundings) in crowded areas, like trains, buses, etc.

- Keep your money and important personal effects out of plain view, i.e. not in a purse or wallet if you can help it.

- Learn some basic words in the native tongue, as well as reading up on culture and customs.

All in all, your trip will be an amazing experience if you are a prepared and thoughtful traveller. Best of luck and enjoy!

If you are a girl be sure to always know your surroundings, but this is true anywhere you go. Romans are usually very nice and will help you with directions. Just follow the same rules you have always known. Be sure not to travel down deserted alleyways and watch out for the gypsies who like to snatch from people all over Rome and near the Termini Station most of all. Be sure you enjoy your time there I miss it and I hope to go back soon. Well I was there I felt very safe and enjoyed my trip very much. Ciao!

Make like you are going to NYC and
+ Keep your documents safe at all times: passports in the hotel or room safe. Leave your hotel with only enough spending money for the day (plus some - maybe a 100 dollar bill in your shoe.

As an American female who lived in Rome for more than 3 years, I can say that those who have advised you to stay attentive are exactly right. Be aware of your circumstances and take steps not to have bad things happen. Carry a photo copy of your passport through the city vs. the original, which should be left in hotel safe. Don't wear a lot of jewelry that will mark you as a tourist. Keep money in more than one place in case you have your pocket picked on a train or in the metro. Rome is no different than any other large city in that there are always people ready to take advantage of a tourist, but Rome is a gorgeous, gracious city and you should enjoy it to the fullest. You will have no problem being alone there, as there is so much to see and experience. Buona fortuna e buon viaggio!
