You're going to have to make at minimum two connections however you do it. The most direct route is to wind up at New York-JFK then continue to Fargo from there. Delta and Air India are the only airlines that fly nonstop to the United States from Mumbai and both are into JFK. The best way to do it would be through Delta, as they codeshare with Northwest into Fargo. The only airlines serving Fargo are Northwest, Delta, and United. Northwest flies to Fargo from Minneapolis, United from Chicago, and Delta from Salt Lake, BUT Delta codeshares on Northwest's Minneapolis-Fargo flights.
You could go BOM-JFK on Delta's nonstop, then JFK-Minneapolis-Fargo on Delta's codeshare flights operated by Northwest. Go to Delta.com for schedules and fares. As an example you would leave at 12:20 am and due to time changes would arrive in Fargo at 3:54 pm the same day even though total flight time is 19 hours and 7 minutes.
