Default What's a good book about someone travelling across the USA?

Preferably someone's experience as opposed to fiction. It would be great if I could buy it on Amazon UK.

The Electric Kool Ade Acid Test by Ken Kesey.

Of course they were off their heads on LSD for most of the time but it is a true story.

Check out "America Unchained" by Dave Gorman. He is an English chap traveling across the US trying to find out what happened to the independent spirit of the nation. It's a book and a documentary movie I believe. I really liked it.

Oh, and "A Land So Strange: The Epic Journey of Cabeza de Vaca" is also one that I really liked, it's historical, and I had a hard time putting it down.

Travels with Charley, by John Steinbeck is a true account of one man's journey across the US. Granted, it was written more than 40 years ago, but it is a classic book. Below is a review.

Bill Bryson is a travel writer that will have you howling with laughter, and thinking, with his funny and poiniant tales from his travels. I can highly reccommend two books which he has written about his travels across America; and a third book of his about American culture:

'A Walk in the Woods' follows Bills journey on the Appalachian trail, along the East coast of the USA from Maine to Georgia.

'The Lost Continent: (Travels in Small Town America)' sees Bill travel from his hometown Des Moines, Iowa, across America and visiting 38 states, whilst trying to recapture some of his childhood.

'Notes from a Big Country' is more about observations from America rather than travels though America, but still worth a read.
