Contact the US embassy and Australian embassy or high commission in your home country. They will be able to tell you everything you need to know about visa requirements and pretty much everything else about visiting each country.

Last year i travelled to both places. 6 weeks in Usa and 6 weeks in Oz. You will not legally be able to work in the USA although some people i met had just done a bit of work here and there, having to settle for doing whatever for a bit of money to get by by asking around.
But legally you will not be able to work there UNLESS you look into getting a working visa(check the US embassy website) I got a 3 month working visa to do seasonal work at a summer camp years ago. I believe you may be able to get up to 6 months!

In Oz im not 100% sure but again i know you can possibly get some work if you ask around. Seasonal work such as fruit picking is popular with travellers to Oz. Its more laid back in Oz and is more similar to the UK. Finding work i think would be easier in Oz too Im not sure legally if you need a visa to work but im guessing you probably would. I didn't work while i was there so i don't know any further. Again probably check the Australian Embassy.

What i done was pin pointed all the places i wanted to go to and then booked the flights needed.Rememebering you can travell around on greyhound buses(USA) and trains alot(buses were cheapest and not bad atall) I booked the first 2 nights into a hostel and then booked all accomadation and hostels as i was travelling around. Just play it by ear, too much planning limits you and ruins the adventure and flexibility.

Enjoy
