Yup, Amtrak. You would go to Chicago first, then on to San Fran. I've done it from Chicago to Arizona before. It takes quite a while, but you get to see some nice scenery along the way!!

Yes, I think Amtrak is the only passenger rail service in the USA. Go to their website for routes. I've rode on the Amtrak train before and loved it. You see sights that you won't see from the highway. Plus you can get up and walk around and there is a "look-out" car, dining car, snacks/ alcoholic drinks car, restrooms, etc. The seats are roomy and comfortable. I met interesting people. You can reserve a sleeper room but it is pretty expensive. The regular seat in the Coach section reclines so it's possible to sleep in it. The thing about reserving a sleeper cabin, though, if you are traveling a long distance, is that the meals are included in the ticket price.
The trip will take a long time, but if you have the time (and money), I think this is really the way to go. |

Amtrak is the only long distance passenger rail in the USA. I've done the cross country trip several times. There are basically 3 cross country trips that change in Chicago (starting in Seattle, SF, or LA) and one really long one that goes the Southern route and changes in New Orleans or Jacksonville.
The SF to Chicago is one of the prettiest trips. It's called the California Zephyr. It takes 3 days, 2 nights. You change in Chicago for the Lake Shore Limited to NY or Boston, or the Capital Limited for Washington DC. That one is 2 days 1 night. There's also the fabulous Empire Builder, Seattle to Chicago (also 3 days 2 nights), or the Southwest Chief (LA to Chicago). The longest one (and the only one I haven't done) is the Sunset Limited, which goes from LA to San Antonio to New Orleans, to pick up the Crescent, or to Jacksonville to pick up one of several trains. To go from coast to coast without stopping for a night is grueling. I don't recommend it. There are no showers or privacy for coach passengers. Stay a few days in Chicago. If you can afford it, definitely go with the sleeper car. If you are traveling with someone, the sleeper is more affordable. The 2 of you pay once for the accommodation, and once each for the regular fare. Meals are free for both. |

Hey, seriously, just rent a car. Renting a car in the US costs next to nothing. Plus, there is nothing more fun than driving across the USA from east to west. A good ol' fashioned American road trip is something everyone needs to expirence. But if you absolutely need to go by train, hit up Amtrak. But I strongly suggest you look into renting a car.
