I live 10 minutes from Canada , & I get across with picture i.d & a birth certificate .. I don't think the passport law is mandatory yet , but i do know that you need 2 forms of i.d , where are you coming from ? & when will you be traveling here. ..

Yes, as of January 23, 2008 you must have a passport to enter Canada., but its an attempt to do some border control. You can get a passport application at your local post office, however it takes 6-8 weeks to process. You may need to hire a service or go directly to a passport office, if you need to expidite your request.

Yes, as of January 1, 2008, you now need a passport to get into Canada. Homeland Security has extended the deadline to June 30, but it would be best to get a passport now (as they are good for ten years) and the rule could change. You can get a passport at most U.S. Post Offices. You need an official birth certificate with embossed stamp (not a copy) and a picture ID. I suggest you call post offices in your area to find out which ones issue passports. Luckily, you do not need a Canadian visa.

You can apply for a passport at most U.S. POST OFFICES... by the time you get one, you will have spent about $100
