I literally just booked a trip to canada for my boyfriend birthday and i didnt realize the strict rules for getting across the border until now.......I read that even if you are driving you must have a passport, birth certificate and drivers license. I only have a passport and license and he only has birth certificate and a license...and it takes forever to get a passport, we're suppose to leave in june! Any suggestions of what to do would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Better start applying for that passport now. Those laws were put into effect last year. It is required even if driving to have a passport to travel from the US to canada and Mexico now. It is supposed to be implemented by this summer at the latest i believe.

I live in Canada and have crossed the border many times by car with no passport. It is wise to get a passport either way as you may need it in the future, so apply for it anyways, even if it comes late. Canada wont turn you away, make sure you have your birthcertificates and licence..you should be fine

You have plenty of time to obtain a passport! Right now, regular processing of passports is about 4-6 weeks. You can also expedite service for an additional $60 and will receive your passport within 3 weeks.
I would definitely just get a passport book. They are good for 10 years for adults and 5 years for minors (15 and under). You will need a certified copy of your birth certificate, this is a sealed/embossed certified original from the registar and county. Please visit: www.travel.state.gov Good luck. |
