Here is my question, I am needed in canada, I dont have a passport , can I fly in and out without it , I am a little confused as to what constitutes "proof of aplication" for a passport and how to obtain it .. I was told that a recipt for a passport would work?

The rules are changing as we speak. You don't need a passport to enter Canada but I am pretty sure you need a passport of get back into the US. Check with this site and it should answer all your questions. www.gonorthwest.com/Visitor/planning/border/border.htm -

You don't need a passport yet. If I were you - get in touch with the/a Canadian embassy or consulate tomorrow during business hours. To fly back to the US you need a US passport. On land no passport is needed at least for Canadians. Check also with the US passport authorities. Do that to,orrow to avoid any nasty surprises.

The regs say you MUST have a passport to fly to and from Canada. Because of the current backup, the passport requirement can be waived if you have applied for a passport and have your application receipt. See the website below for complete info on this. If you have not applied yet, then you need to do so ASAP. Good Luck.
