Default Do you need to have a passport for a baby to travel outside of Canada?

With the new law of having to have a passport to travel in and out of Canada,do you need a seperate passport for a baby or does it go on with one of the parents?
Great info!!You are all a big help!thank you,we do not plan to travel till next year, our son is just 10 months and is still recovering from heart surgery.

you need a separate one for the baby. The baby is its own person.

Yes, they do. There is a first passport that is valid from 0 to 3 years of age, then after that they are good for 5 years each.

All children under 16 years of age must hold a valid passport, but it is the parent who applies on behalf of the child. The signature of both parents is required, unless there is a valid custody order allowing one parent to obtain a passport without the other's consent. In every other case, both parents must participate.

Children 16 years and older apply for their own passport, as adults.

You can download the required application form at

http://www.passport.gc.ca/forms/pdfs/pptc046.pdf

Applying for a passport by mail is still very slow, expect to wait about three months. If you apply in person, you can expect to receive your passport in the mail within three weeks. It can be ready for pick-up for an additional $10. fee.

Rush passports can be prepared in 1 to 3 days but it costs several hundred dollars.

Hope this helps!

Yep my 3 month old kid needed one.

Even if your kid was born on your trip youd have to go to your embassy to get a temp one.
