Default US Passport validity needs between US/Canada Air Travel?

We are US citizen with american passport. We are visiting Canada for a week by Air in this July. I know that now we need to show passport for entering in US/Canada with a new law in effect. However, my son's (age 6) passport expires in Nov 2007 (within 6 months of travel dates) and I was wondering if this will create an issue entering in Canada and also while entering in US ports?

Any response with fact/publication will be helpful. Thanks
Also, my mother has valid indian passport but has US permanent resident card (greencard).

Would she need US passport or Visa for Canada?

Do to the high demand of passport applications by US citizens, a compromise has been struck with the US State DEPT. You will be given a tracking nbr as your passport nbr. This is used in leiu of your passport untill it can be completed and put in your hands. This only applys to folks who have applied for passport not general travel.

That is not a problem. Yes, most places want you to have a valid passport for 6 months, but not too much concern between the US and Canada. Partially they are just as concerned about flight security (and your passport is valid at the time of the flight, not worrying about your stay) and partially if traveling this year you could still travel between the 2 countries by land without a passport anyway (so it's not like you are going to get completely stuck in the country)

I did it. Because of long passport office line ups, I flew to the US with a week left on my Canadian Passport and back with a couple of days left on it. No one mentioned it at all, or even seemed to notice. That was 2 customs agents, and 2 airline staff plus a couple more checkpoints that all looked at my passport.

Yes the 6 month rule does apply in alot of countries, Canada is not currently one of them. Your son should be fine.

Also something to consider in the future...

Buffalo Int'l airport is not far from the border. I fly within the US all the time as a Canadian citizen just by crossing the border. I drive to Buffalo and fly to California FROM Buffalo thus not needing a passport. The rule is from US - Canada yes you need one, but US desintation - US destination you don't. You can avoid some hassle by flying INTO Buffalo as your destination as you DO NOT need a passport to cross the border (as of yet, however, that's coming in 2008).

Just a tip ^^

Enjoy your trip.
