Default Would it be faster to get to NYC from Michigan by traveling through Canada?

I'm looking for the fastest way to get to NYC from Michigan (Detroit Area) in my car. Would it be faster to go through Canada or shoud I just stay in the US?

There is no doubt that it used to be faster going through Canada. However, with the time it takes these days to cross the border I'd recommend staying in the US.

Fastest simplest way is to now stay on state side. Even if you did'nt have the border issue, you travel to far up and across and have to cross over again to cut back done. It's a great scenic route if you have the time.

For NYC to Detroit? I don't know if it ever HAS been faster to go through Canada. Going through northern Ohio is VERY direct, and a quick right turn up the shore of Lake Erie will get you to Detroit.

Even if there was NO delay for border crossings, and even if Ontario was part of the U.S., the route through Ohio is still shorter distance-wise. It wins this debate, no matter how you slice it.

Stay in the U.S., it's pretty direct. If you were coming from Buffalo or the Adirondacks, that might be a different story, but you're coming from farther south. Just jump on I-80 West off the George Washington Bridge, and get I-75 north out of Toledo. One long day, or two conservative days.

You've got to go north a bit if you take the route through Canada, and you have customs on both ends. So the Ohio route (I-80 I assume) would work better. If you were going to Boston, it would be another story.
