If you travel by land or sea you can cross the border with a birth certificate if you also have government issued photo ID, like a drivers license.

Eventually you will need a passport, but not yet.

Not any more; I believe the new rules took effect January 1, 2008. You need the passport, sadly.

If you're driving to canada, yes. In fact it's much cheaper to get a copy of your birth certificate, then to get a passport.

although, if you're flying, your required to have a passport.

You cannot travel with only a birth certificate. You must have an official photo ID, something such as a driver's licence. You won't need a passport for a while yet, but the day is coming when you will need a passport to cross the border.

You can get into Canada, the trick is getting back to the US. My understanding is that you don't need a passport at this point, but a birth certificate is necessary.

hallo,
Starting January 23rd, 2007 all United States citizens need a valid US passport to enter Canada. United States legal residents (Green Card holders) need their original Green Card and a passport from their country of origin.

Travellers crossing the border by land or sea require a government issued photo ID such as a drivers license and a birth certificate. If you were not born in the US but are a US citizen then you should bring your citizenship card as well. If you plan on travelling by air then you will require a passport. If you are too young to have a drivers license or other form of ID and are travelling with you parents then a birth certificate will probably be sufficient. I would reconfirm this before travelling however and, if you have any type of photo ID, bring it.

The rules were to have changed in January to require a passport for all travel, then they were postponed until July, 2008 and, as of now, they have been postponed further until sometime in 2009.
