At present travelling by land or sea would not require a passport. However if you are flying and actually enter Canada (i.e. drive from Seattle to Vancouver then fly, or fly from Seattle to Vancouver, enter Canada, then fly to Alaska) then you will need a passport. If you are using a travel agent I would suggest asking them as they should be up to date on the latest regulations. I personally feel however that a passport is the easiest way to travel since, for me, it has always saved time. The US is changing the rules regularly though so if you have time to get a passport I would suggest getting it. Double check with your transportation provider as they can confirm what type of ID you will require.
