You only need a passport if you are going to FLY from Canada to the U.S. As to the birth certificate...you have no choice about that! If you were born in Canada, you will have a Canadian birth certificate. If you were born in China, you will have a chinese birth certificate...you
CANNOT change that. If you travel by land, you need to carry your certified birth certificate and a gov't issued photo I.D. like a drivers license. Aftet summer of 2008, passports will also be needed for LAND travel between Canada and the U.S. And you do not need the birth certificate to enter Boston...the city will not ask to see your birth certificate. You need it at the U.S. Canadian border. So...if you were born in a different country, but now live in Canada, you need your original birth certificate. If you are still a citizen of the country where you were born, you need a passport from that country to fly internationally. If you are now a citizen of Canada, you need a Canadian passport. |

it depends... what is your citizenship? if your birth certificate is from a different country yet you're a canadian citizen... you need to present whatever proof you have of your canadian citizenship. that may be your passport or your naturalization papers. anything that says you are a canadian citizen.
if you're not a canadian citizen... then you need a passport and a tourist visa in order to gain entry into the US... whether traveling by car or plane. |

If you are Canadia, a passport is the best ID to have to enter the US. If you are a visitor to Canada and want to visit the States, you require a tourist visa and a passport from your country of origin, and that you must have requaested before you left your country.

It depends if you are travelling by land /sea or by air and your country of origin. Your birth certificate would be issued by your country of birth. A Canadian can enter the US with just a photo ID and birth certificate. Citizens of some countries may need a passport and/or a visa. It is best to have a passport, which is required if you are travelling by air.

Are you a Canadian citizen? If so then you will need to show proof that you are, this includes a passport, Government Issued Photo ID, citizenship papers. If you are not Canadian but from Mexico or the Caribbean then the photo ID & birth certificate are fine. If you are from another country all together then you will need a passport and possibly a Visa.

If you are planning to fly to the US then you will need a passport from the country you are a citizen of. Depending on that you may also require a visa. The requirement is to cross the border, not to enter a specific city and, if driving or travelling by another form of land transportation, you will require a government issued photo ID and a birth certificate if you are a Canadian citizen. If you are a citizen of another country you would need a passport, and possibly a visa, which you should have in any case.
If you were born in another country but are a Canadian citizen you will also require your Canadian Citizenship Card. Your best bet however, especially if you plan on travelling frequently is to get a Canadian Passport. A friend of mine was born in the US but is now a Canadian citizen. She uses her passport which makes things significantly easier for travelling across the border by car. The US Government is in the process of requiring a passport for all travel to and from the US however the implementation date for this has not been fixed. It was to be effective July, 08 however I have heard that it may be extended. The last article I read said that although the Administration wanted it to go into effect this coming summer Congress had mandated that it go into effect in summer, 2009. If you are a landed immigrant with permanent residency then you may be able to get by with your residency documentation in addition to the photo ID. My recommendation however is, if you are a Canadian Citizen, to apply for your Canadian Passport as soon as possible. This will simplify your travel plans for the forseeable future. |
