Traveling to Canada from Michigan in Feb 08...?

Do I HAVE to get a passport, or is a state issued Drivers License and Birth Certificate sufficent?
I would be driving, and wondering with the DL and BC how much trouble I would have getting back into the states

For an American travelling to Canada...the old rule applies...it's very easy. Our border services is very lax.

For a Canadian to travel to the US however...they would need a driver's license AND either a passport, citizenship card or birth certificate.
