When Canadians go shopping in the US and return to Canada the same day, they will usually discard the bags, receipts and plastic covering of the new products they bought so when they get to the border it will seem like they didn't just purchase them in the US. That way, they don't have to pay the tax.
I'm guessing you don't want to do that because they are gifts, so I would advise to not don't wrap the presents until you get to Canada. Bring the receipts just in case they are really strict but you don't have to tell them you have the gifts. If it's all under $40, it shouldn't be an issue.
