If you are bringing your dog into Canada you will require the rabies vaccination certificate certifying they have had their rabies vaccine with in the past year, as well some of the border officials like to see the international health certificate that you can get from the vet when you have the rabies vaccine done, the international health certificate just states that the dog to the best of the vet's knowledge is in good health and that it is free from any diseases etc as well it shows that the vaccinations are up to date. You do not need to have the health certificate like you need to have the rabies one, but it is always a good idea to take that along with the rabies vaccination certificate.
You will need the rabies vaccination certificate, some people are under the wrong assumption you can just show the rabies tag, but it does not work that way, they want to see the certificate with the dog's description, age etc and your name on it.
I am very sure(my friend works for customs so I verified with him) as well we travel with pets regularly to the US. And it works on both sides you may be asked on your way back home to the US for the vaccination certificate.
