to travel to canada,doi need a passport?

Yes, if you want to return to the States and you are traveling by airplane.
If you are traveling by car you only need a birth certificate or proof of citizenship as of now. That will change soon and you will need a passport to come back into the States. I'm not sure when the new rules take effect.

If you are flying you do, but if you are driving or boating across the border you won't need a passport until sometime next year.
