The regulations on passports for US/Canada travel are in the process of changing. Currently I believe a passport is not necessary to travel from US to Canada, but may actually be required to travel from Canada to US.
Make sure you find the accurate answer before leaving, or you could find yourself unable to re-enter the US. |

As I'm sure you well know, the US - Canada border is the most friendly in the world and in the past, US and Canadian residents could enter and leave at will with only a simple driver's license or any type of birth certificate.
That was before a bunch of maniacs slammed two planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. By January 1st, passports will be required to enter the US from Canada. There are some border patrol officers that really won't enforce this law unless your driving a truck wearing a beard and a turban, sreaming "Death to America!" The Border Patrol may get a little suspicious from the latter. But only a little, because they aren't allowed the racially profile (wink, wink)... *L* |

If you have time to get a passport I would suggest you get one. It won't be until next year that you will have to have one.Two years ago in May of 2003 our car was searched coming back from a wedding in Canada. We stay for the weekend. The last time my husband and I crossed with our son from Canada into the United States (last summer 2005)) I totally and honestly forgot our birth certificates. The immigration official just about went bolistic. He wanted to know how he could tell if our son was ours? How did he know our baby wasn't a baby Taliban? He stated that there are alot of people who cross the border and have kids that might not be theirs. Did we know how many missing kids there are? You are at their mercy. You can't say or do anything. They have you between a rock and a hard stone. I realize they are doing their job but I feel that since September 11th the border people are much more suspicious of us the Americans on the American side. He chewed us out for about 10 minutes. We almost didn't make it back. We haven't had a whole lot of problems with the Canadian side. My brother had a girlfried who was from Canada and this was about 3 or 4 years ago and she was leaving from the United States and going back to Canada. She got quizzed for three hours. She fit the profile of a very beautiful young woman who could possibly have been sent by drug dealers to smuggle drugs over the border. They searched her luggage. They quizzed for three hours and she didn't smuggle the drugs. They searched her car. I don't feel they are justified in interrogating someone for 3 hours especially if they didn't find anything. So if you cannot get your passport at least have your birth certificate and drivers license. It seems like we the Americans haave to prove to our own country that we are not the terroists.
