Technically a passport is not needed for Canadian citizens to enter the United States of American. If you can afford the cost purchase your passport just in case. Soon a Passport will be required. Since you will probably want a passport at that time it is not a bad idea to go ahead and purchase one. US passports last 10 years. I would imagine a Canadian passport lasts close to that long.
"U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, are both seeking a delay to a requirement under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative that mandates Americans have a passport-like card, called a PASS card, to travel by land to Canada and back by Jan. 1, 2008. Canadians would need a similar card, if the United States would accept it, or a passport to enter the United States." |

Requirements
All foreign visitors except Canadians need valid passports to enter the US and to re-enter their home countries. Canadians must demonstrate proof of Canadian citizenship, such as a citizenship card with photo ID. The US does not allow entrance if the holder’s passport expires in under six months; returning home with an expired passport is illegal and may result in a fine. |

We just went down and back through the US to Mexico.
Going down was OK due to US Immigration being in Toronto. Coming back through US Immigration in Houston was an absolute nightmare. We had to show our passports about a dozen times to get through there. I cant imagine trying to do it without a passport. Drivers license, birth certificate, give your head a shake. "NOBODY" should travel post 9/11 without a passport. People may say, you can do this and you can do that. Go ahead and tell it to the guy who's stopping you from getting on the plane. He probably hasn't heard what these folks on the net tell you. You go and line up and get that passport. |
