The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.
In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline will be as follows: December 31, 2006 - Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. December 31, 2007 - Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel. |

Not yet,end of 2007 if you're flying in you'll need a passport, but until then a picture id and your birth certificate. Both governments haven't come up with something they both like yet, hopefully by 2009.
Come on up we're friendly and we love tourists. |

A passport will not hurt. A birth certificate is good also.
They will ask you where you were born, if you are a citizen of the US, where you will be going & how long will you be. I go thru the check in NY to Montreal every year, & that is usually all, but I have my passport open where they can see I have one. |

If you're a US Citizen, you don't need a passport to enter Canada. You will need proof of identity (photo identification and birth certificate).
However, IMHO...it's always best to travel with a passport, regardless of whether it is a requirement or not as it expedites the customs process. Yes, there are rumblings that Americans and Canadians will one day need passports to cross the border. |

You do not need one currently, but you need an acceptable form of identification proving your us citizenship. Most often used is a drivers license and recommend having a birth certificate also. They usually don't ask to see the birth certificate, but they can. Last I heard, passports were going to be required late december 2007 or jan 2008.
