I just read a story about the US Secretary of Defense urging Americans to travel to Iran to help bridge differences between the two countries. I love to travel but have always overlooked the Middle East because of perceived violence and strong anti-americanism. I'm bummed that these fears keep me from experiencing the cultures of this beautiful and historical region. I want to believe that even though a people may dislike the actions of my government that they still might welcome me as a tourist in their country. Do any Americans have any tales of travel in the Middle East (positive and negative experiences welcommed.) Thanks

Yes, I've been to Iran a few times and actually, I just got back from there like 2 weeks ago.
All I can say is it's all in the "media".do not believe whatever you hear. When you go there by yourself you will know what I mean. They are very friendly and they absolutely love foreigners. But keep in mind that there is almost nothing "American" there. In most cases, you really won't have a problem, but you need to be aware that you cannot use credit cards there, so you just need to take as much as cash you can with you! There are also some Islamic rules which aren't as bad as they sound, but still there are some and I'm sure you already know 'bout those. |
