As a foreigner, you are not allowed to enter the Mosques unless it is an organized tour but you can't just walk up like "Hey Abdulla, how's it hangin" and walk past him into the mosque. Even if you are a muslim your deficiency in Arabic may prove doubt to your religious preference and if you aren't a Muslim then it's pretty much forbidden.

Are you able to go out alone? In certain countries, NO. In the rest.. Uh.. Yeah but it's not advisible and in a few wide open cities in certain countries like Dubai, UAE, Manama, Bahrain and Muscat, Oman you are pretty much safe but in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait it is a no-no and you need to wear a hair covering and go out with a male escort, usually a nice taxi driver will drop you off at your destination and escort you to the door or may walk with you while you do some shopping. In Doha, Qatar it is better to have an escort but it is not required. Iraq is not reccomended that you visit.

Some countries you cannot visit unless you are working like Kuwait and Iraq for sure and Saudi I think. Most countries you can apply in advace for a visa from thier US based embassy before you leave or for the more tourist geared areas just get it on arrival for like $20-$30 or less.
