I would travel to the Middle East. There are some great places to see. The ancient city of Petra in Jordan is a place I've always wanted to go. I had a friend that was in Israel working when this latest conflict happened. For the most part, he felt safe. Said that Tel Aviv was a wonderful city with great cultural diversity. He also said that Hifa was beautiful. Have you given any thoughts to Turkey? I wouldn't recommend going to places with fresh conflict. I would also recommend going with an adventure travel group like GAP Adventure Tours. Solo travel might be pretty risky.

I would go, but only to the more western type of places like the beach resorts of Egypt and Israel. Sharm El Sheikh is the diving and sea sports resort where many peace talks in the Middle East has taken place, and there are plenty of guards scattered around the resort to make sure that the terrorists do not interrupt your vacation.
And of course a visit to up and coming and super fascinating Dubai would be very interesting. But Iran, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia - I think I would not feel perfectly safe there and would not enjoy it as much. |

I would like to travel to the Middle East someday.
In North Africa (which is part of the Middle East by some standards), I would like to go to Tunisia, Morocco, and Egypt. In the rest of the Middle East, I would like to travel to Israel and Saudi Arabia. Actually, I think Iran would be a great experience for the historical travel. Iran and Israel are the most appealing to me, then Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Morocco. |

I have travelled to the MIddle East and gladly would again.
It is a fascinating region with a rich history, friendly people, great food, fun shopping, good diving on Red Sea, perfect weather, and some particularly unique sites that you will not find anywhere else in the world (pyramids, Petra). I think you're missing out if you don't go in your lifetime. I lived in Amman for two years, and I worked in Lebanon for one year, and I also worked in Kuwait and Iraq. I've travelled for work and for holidays to Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Oman, Israel/Palestine, and Tunisia. I've also been to Turkey and Sudan (but those may or may not be considered MIdeast) but I list them here. My experiences in the region inspired me to study Arabic so now if I travel there I have a decent level of communication skills. I travelled alone to Syria once, Tunisia, and Oman on holiday. I never had a problem (I'm blonde, I'm female, I'm American). Okay, yes a taxi driver tried to rip me off in Istanbul, and I might have paid too much in a souk...but those are things that happen to tourists worldwide. More recently, I was in the region during the start of the war in Iraq, and while people aired their views, I never felt that they were holding me responsible for the state of the world. I certainly never felt threatened. I was able to visit places like Petra and Palmyra with hardly any other tourists which was amazing. Because tourism was hurting from the conflicts in Iraq, Gaza, and Lebanon, there were often great hotel packages and discounts throughout the region. People were far more friendly than most other places I've been (and I travel a lot). For example, we got a flat tire on one trip to Syria (10 days driving all over)...the local mayor showed up on his bike, invited us to come to his home for tea while the tire was fixed (the mechanic was roused to open his shop and help). Half the village came by for tea and to see the foreigners, take photos, etc. I would like to visit Morocco, Yemen, Iran and Libya....they're on my list. I personally don't like the Gulf (exception is Oman, which i love) as much as Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan. |

I travel there frequently because I've been working there (in Oman, to be precise) for the last four years as a teacher. Like you said, the Middle East is a big place and is not confined to Iraq. I love living there and consider Oman to be the most beautiful country in the world. I've been to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Qatar too and have encountered no problems.
