Wat is padkos in English? Travelling Food? When you go on holiday by car, do you prepare "padkos" like most of our parents did when we were little or do you stop at a take away at a filling station etc. along the way? Do people still have cold boere wors, meat balls and boiled eggs, ham and lettuce or egg and mayonaise sandwhiches for padkos or is it a thing of the past?

road snacks...?!?! I'd stick to padkos! ;-)
we still do it, but we travel 1400km in one day. we don't stop at picknick areas anymore though, as it's a bit dangerous!!! It's too busy to stop at restaurants along the road - and you wait forever for your food! And face it,nothing ever comes near your mums food... with Mrs Balls!! ;-) |

Yes, food for the road. Travelling food is an interesting alternative. We still do that. When we travel for a few hours then we always take a flask of coffee, and sandwiches, yes often egg and mayonnaise. Then an apple or two, and grapes and chewing gum. Chewing keeps one awake. We also have towels and water. Just like the girl guides: Be Prepared.
When the trip takes long, like when we travel to the Netherlands to fetch our boerewors and stock up on marmite etc. Then we will stop at mac on the way home. They have lovely fruit and yoghurt whichis so refreshing after a long trip. And a krokettenbroodje, which we don´t get in Germany. It´s always nice to have padkos. |
