In any country try and prepare meals yourself. In any case, make sure that the food is very hot. Also, use bottle water, as well as any ice from bottled, boiled, or distilled water. Otherwise, in restaurants ask for and drink only boiled/hot water like they used for making tea.
I thought it interesting when in Taiwan, they would only serve you hot/boiled water unless you asked for it.

Be careful where you eat and what you drink. Follow the rules to drink bottled water... drinks with no ice, etc... Eat things that have been cooked thoroughly and are still very hot... Having said that, we eat salads and brush our teeth with tap water and usually have no problems. But check out our page on Pepto-Bismol.

When we travel anywhere I always take Pepto-Bismol with us. My little hubby used to get sick everywhere... and once we started taking Pepto-Bismol as a preventative he has no problems. We try not to drink the water in some countries, but we eat everything everywhere. You can check our site for more details: http://www.mousetourstravels.com/pepto-bismol.html

Happy travels... even if you don't travel the world... just remember that life is a journey... embrace and enjoy it! http://www.mousetourstravels.com

Tips for avoiding food poisoning

Use bottled or sterilised water, if you are concerned about the safety of the local tap water
Avoid ice unless you are sure it was made from treated or chlorinated water
Eat freshly and thoroughly cooked food that is still piping hot
Avoid food that has been kept warm
Avoid uncooked food, unless you can peel or shell it yourself
Avoid salads, as they may have been washed in contaminated water
Avoid ice cream from unreputable sources. These include portable ice cream sellers who may not have adequate refrigeration and ice cream that may have melted and been refrozen
Be careful with fish and shellfish - uncooked fish is particularly hazardous
