I want to travel to Sao Paulo and/ or Salvador to spend a week with my family. Must sees?

I want to travel to Sao Paulo and/ or Salvador to spend a week with my family. What are the best options to stay and to eat? Any must-sees?
Initial idea was Rio but I have changed to Sao Paulo because of the dengue issue in Rio.

Continue to prefer Rio de Janeiro. Mosquitoes and dengue are a minor problem. Use repelant and it's enough. The sights and places justify it.
