Where on the economic scale did most families traveling the overland trail fall?

I left my packet at school, and if anyone could help me out here I would be eternally greatful.

middle class.

Poor people could not afford the wagon and supplies to take the trail. Wealthy people could take a ship around to the west coast. That left the middle class to take the trail.

It would have been the lower middle class - enough money to take the trip but not secure enough to want to stay where they were.
