Default American Traveling to Makka--being only Muslim in your family? ?

Ok--I posted a previous question about traveling to Makka and I was told you have to have a male--from your family--accompany you. OK, well what if you're the only Muslim in your family and your husband is Christian?? I guess I'm out of luck then, huh?

You are allowed to travel there with a group of women. One person told me you have to be a certain age (40+ or so) to do this, and someone else has told me that you can be any age as long as you don't have an acceptable mahram to take you. So I don't really know but I'm in pretty much the same position as you.

Very interesting, i've never really thought about that, so i've just looked it up and found this site that may be able to help you. It's a group that gather women who may not have a Maharam (a male to take you) and for women converts/reverts.

They plan a trip to visit Makkah and perform Umrah.
I hope this is of some help for you;

http://beautifulmuslimah.blogspot.com/2008/05/hajj-for-unmarried-convertrevert.html

EDIT: I have also found this article about the issue that i hope will help, I've copied and pasted ....

'What is the ruling of women performing Hajj without a Mahram?
The Shaafi'iyyah state that Hajj is not obligatory upon a woman until she finds a male Mahram relative or a husband or a group of trusted women. If she finds any of the previous three, it is obligatory upon her to perform Hajj. If she cannot find one of the three, she is not obliged to perform the Hajj.

The condition that the Shaafi'iyyah hold for a woman to perform Hajj is that she must be able to perform the journey securely. This security can be found when a husband or a Mahram or a group of trusted women accompanies her.

In the popular opinion of the Madhhab, it is permissible for a woman to perform Hajj if she finds only one trusted women to take the journey with. More so, they say it is permissible for her to travel alone if she shall be safe and she fears nothing on the road. This is how they understand the Ahaadeeth which forbid a women from travelling alone.

However, if she has already performed her first obligatory Hajj and this is a voluntary performance, then she is not permitted to travel alone - she must be accompanied by a husband or a Mahram. In this case, travelling with a group of trusted women is not permitted; this is the more correct position in the Madhhab.

The opinion of the Maalikiyyah is similar to that of the Shaafi'iyyah in that they allow a woman who does not find a Mahram or husband to travel with a secure group. They add that this secure group may be a group of men, a group of women, or a group made up of men and women.

In the Madhhab of Imam Ahmad, Hajj is not obligatory upon a women who does not find a mahram or husband to travel with her. In fact, Imam Ahmad specifically commented on this issue, as Abu Dawood states: I said to Ahmad, “A wealthy woman who does not find a mahram to travel with her to perform Hajj, is Hajj Waajib upon her?” He said, “No.”

They cited as proof for what the opinion that they took a selection of Ahaadeeth which we shall mention shortly.

The Hanafiyyah held an opinion similar to that of the Hanaabilah. They said that Hajj is not compulsory upon a woman who does not find a mahram or husband to travel with. In addition to the following ahaadeeth, they said that for her to perform Hajj without male assistance would expose her to situations that may very well harm her.'

your marriage with Christian isn't valid and you will commit zina' with him untill you are divorced from him.

Marry a good muslim husband and you have a mahram to travel with.

Otherwise you arer commiting sin and the change is great you will come in problems not just there in America but also in KSA.

Alcohol, drugs and rape cases do also happen in Makkah and Medinah, sadly. Who will protect you agianst that if you travel alone in a country where women aren't allowed to drive alone? so you should take the bus or taxi with a non mahram man as a driver??

Again not true. Any travel agency that deals with Hajj tours takes you in a group and you are never left alone etc. That's not just for Americans traveling for all muslims traveling. You have a guide etc that explains the when, where etc of the day and whoever is telling you all this rubbish, please stop listening to them.
You have not even taken your Shahada yet so first things first sister and Mecca is a dream for most muslims not the first thing they do. Many muslims what decades before they go to Mecca and perform Hajj its not like you have to know all the details about traveling to Mecca yesterday is it. You are not the only American to ever convert and you keep wording your questions as if Islam is against you. That's not fair for converts, guess i am out of luck then.......
No one is trying to make anything difficult for you. Islam has its rules and they are for all muslims no matter what country they are from. You being an American is irrelevant to you traveling as a muslim to Mecca people go with tour groups you dont need a male family member.....
Please why dont stop listening to however is telling you such things. Are you already married? If not then a muslim woman cannot have christian husband anyway. If you are already married before reverting that is something different but if single you are not permitted to marry anyone who is not of the Islamic faith.

Peace to you...

you can go in a group of women. Last year I went to hajj and met women who were travelling in a group, but generally they were 40-45 and up. So it is absolutely possible.

You can go for Hajj if you're part of a group of women. You will need to book your trip though a travel agency. Don't worry, it's possible.

And, I hope that your husband will convert also. :)
