Try going to the hospital's website and/or calling directly the social services department. Social services departments sometimes have agreements with nearby hotels for special rates, or they may have family housing that they provide. There are also Ronald McDonald houses [if the patient is a child] associated with some hospitals.

I would definitely ask the hospital, because they can probably get you the best rates. When my husband was hospitalized unexpectedly in a town away from home, the hospital volunteers "gave" me housing directly across the street for just $25 for the night, and it was in a nice cottage. This in expensive Santa Barbara, California.

There's a Sheraton Hotel right there in University City. It's on 36th and Chestnut. That should be the most reasonable one.
Worst case, there's always downtown, but Penn Pres. is very accessible from the train stations. The Market Frankfort Line (Blue Line) run underneathe of Market Street and has a stop at 34th Street. It's a relatively safe walk from there too, but like I said, the Sheraton is the closest. |
