I just got back from NYC and decided to save money I would rent a room from a local. I ended up payin $60/night for an entire week and stayed in an amazing building in Spanish Harlem. You can find all sort of deals on Craigslist under vacation rentals. There are a lot of New Yorkers who rent out extra rooms, or their entire apartment in their absence. Consider it. I am so glad I was able to visit NYC, save money, and live like a New Yorker instead of paying for a hotel room I would have never been at except to sleep.

Unfortunately hotels in Manhattan get quite pricey. I would suggest something in Long Island City (LIC) queens, close to the 7 train. The 7 takes you right into Manhattan in about 10 min, and the rates are much more affordable (110-130$/night). I believe there are 2 Holiday Inns around there, and a Quinta Inn.
