You are asking for too much detail to be given here. I would recommend reading (or at least skimming) Len Deighton's "Blood Tears and Folly". It is an easy read, not too heavy on statistics, but a good general source.

Cause: declaration of war to defend Poland and other countries from German invasion
Battle of Britain: Germany tried to invade England to conquer it. In order to do this, they needed to destroy Britain's air support. First loss for Germany, decided then to starve Britain and bomb it. Britain survived. Kept an base for the allies from D-Day on.
D-Day: day of starting invasion of Normandy, starting the Western front. Objective- secure designated beaches and towns around it, prepare to take a naval yard which supplies can be dropped off to. Opened another front, stretching the Germans too far. Assassination attempt of Hitler after the fact.
North Africa: used to divert troops from the Eastern front to meet the Western allies. Therefore, the Russians could easily deal w/the Germans. It worked. Germans ended up falling for the trap. The US+Britain defeated them.
Italy: continue to divert the axis, knock Italy out of the war, and bring the Germans down south in prep for a Western front. Forced Italy to change sides. Germans fall for trap again. Stuck there until end of war.
Bulge: Germans try to destroy the Western allies plans by cutting off their supply roots. Allies fight off invasion and wins. War shortened by 9 months (experts say.)
Eastern: Germany plans to conquer the USSR. It fails. 2 important battles. Moscow- December 1941- stopped direct invasion of USSR. Stalingrad- September 1942-Jan. 1943- stopped them from trying to stop USSR by conquering their economy towns. Put Russia on counter-offensive.
