Default Why was the soviet union treated as a criminal after ww2 for taking Eastern Europe?

britain had taken half the world by fighting for it and ruling over people,

the soviets paid 20million lives for the land but were treated suspiciously,

i hate it how eveyrone thinks they were the baddies after the war,
they won ww2 but werent given the recognition they deserve.

compared to some of the eastern battles D-day and that was nothing in terms of casualties

Ah, because war time showed our leaders how pliable we are when we have a perceived common enemy. We don't question our leaders or their policies, we allow them to dilute our freedoms in the fight against the baddies.

Problem was, we'd just beaten the baddies, there were no more baddies. We needed new baddies, the soviets fit the bill.

Problem was, the commies gave up their ideology and that left us with no more baddies, same problem all over again.

Phew, just in the nick of time, up steps that old pal of the USA, Bin Laden and hey presto, the muslims are the new baddies.

As a citizen of one of the Baltic States annexed by the Soviet Union I say: they were criminals and continue to be criminals until Russia acknowledges and apologises for the deportations, murder and political suppression of our people and occupation of our countries that it has committed.

Umm, lets see, first Stalin became your leader.
That didn't bode well for the future now,, did it?
,
Basically, Stalin invaded Poland an hour after Hitler did in 1939. They divided the country in half and proceeded to divided the people in half as well.
Half went to concentration camps.
Half got bullets.
.
Then after the war, when Hitler gave himself one of those bullets, Stalin, America and Britain all agreed on post war Europe.
The idea was, the allies would rebuild Eastern Europe and let the people decide on what kind of government they wanted.
.
Stalin agreed.
.
Stalin lied.
.
Stalin had no intention of allowing Eastern Europe to be anything other then a communist state.
The Eastern Europeans were once again divided.
.
One third went to Siberia
One third went into neatly dug graves
One third agreed that a totalitarian state was just what the doctor ordered.
,
So, yes the Russian people fought a tough war against their former ally Hitler.
Yes it's also true that 5million deaths that are attributed to the war were actually political assassination's, military purges, and the like.
But,, Stalin did not have the right to subjugate Eastern Europe
to the same brutal system that the Russian people have recently disposed of.
.
Got it now?

because after the war the other allies did not keep control of SOVEREIGN nations like the soviets did.

and your accusations of Britain are from about a hundred or more years before. England had already begun to either release or lose its control over its colonies. You are arguing that because imperialism existed at one point Russia had the right to take over control of free nations (Russia had collonies too, but they lost them sooner than the othre major world powers)... that's just ignorant.

the Polish people paid with millions of lives as well, why are you arguing that because the soviets died they had a right to their land?

how about the fact that Russia ended up making the Germans look like amateurs when it came to persecuting it's own people and the people of the lands the took control of?

why is it that most of the POWs taken by the other allies were released shortly after the war but Russia held most of its prisoners in labor camps for up to 15 years after the war?

face it the Soviet Union was Evil. no one can rightfully argue other wise.

High casualties means you win? England saw the threat before us! They rush at the fall of japan and took land ,they throw out the French in Berlin America almost went to war over their occupation of Austria Their actions after war -you could not trust them and guess who supplied them?

Just so you know ww2 was won before the soviets and the allied powers ever enterd berlyn. It was a race to berlyn germany between the soviets and the allied powers, who ever got there first would rule it just so happens we got there at the same time. The question you ask is an extremely charged emotional question. But most of the resentment is for what happend after they enterd berlyn. You can look that up and see what the troops did for yourself. Your right the soviets paid the heaviest price in that war but faught heroically to defend its borders. I firmly believe if the germans never invaded russia they would have ruled over half the world and the allied powers losses would have been tenfold to take it back

The west eventually gave up its colonies it helped spread democracy, the Soviet Union had no plans to do the same in the east.
