American's very often like to say Britain is the mother of America. However, American's are quite a bit more arrogant, loud and bossy than most British. If you look at the names on American films a lot of them sound German, Russian, Eastern European rather than English or British. Eastern Europeans and Germans are more like Americans in character, loud and brash with forcefull personalities. No insult intended to Americans by the way or to British, implying that we are whimpish, which we are.

i tried to say the exact same thing before but got a lot of thumbs down. the fact is, that most whites in america do not actually descend from the english. trust me, i've lived in england all my life and english names are very identifiable. most americans do not have english surnames! as for character? well i think americans as a whole have a culture that represents their country. BIG.

No we do not like to say Britain is the mother of America! The only people who i have heard say that is the British! They might of killed off the American Indians, but that is not a good thing and all the good that has came out of this country has NOTHING to do with the British.
I think we Americans are the way we are because America was founded basically by a bunch of people who were tired of the European governments not giving them the freedoms they deserve and over taxing them. Thats why a lot of Europeans moved over here. For once they were in a country where the success of them and their family came first and was celebrated. Where they had the RIGHT to peruse happiness. Then we defeated those big red coats who ruled most of the world with an iron first, with just a bunch of passionate farmers and other citizens tired of not having their freedom of religion etc. There has been a sense of pride in our country since then and that is why we are so patriotic. We have been indoctrinated since birth to know we are lucky to be born in this country. Sorry, but for a country that is only 400 years old and for us to be on top, that is something to be proud of. And we did this all because of our hard work, not because we went to other countries and took all they had and left the natives to live in squalor. Not because we tried to control the world through war, murder and colonization like the British, Spanish, the French...So maybe that is what you are mistaking for arrogance. We are not such as reserved as the Brits because we don't have to be. You can do what you want, say what you want, live how you want and nobody cares what anyone else thinks about them. Its a free country and why should we have to? Despite what the person above me may say, the British sent their rejects and criminals to Australia. America is made up of immigrants who came here seeking a better life. Something that their own European (or whatever) governments could not provide for them. Many people risk their lives to get here, some even dying on the way. Using people smugglers that they will be indebted to for the rest of their lives. Some leaving their whole family and small children behind to do this. Why is that? Because this is the land of opportunity and you cannot succeed the way you can here anywhere else. |

In one paragraph, you've managed to insult both Americans and Brits, and show your incredible ignorance for people who live in other countries that you obviously know nothing about. I believe that calls for a serious celebration. The drinks are on me.
Congrats! You're officially the douche of the english speaking part of Y/A. Care to insult the Canadians, Australians, and New Zealanders as well, just to make it a clean sweep? C'mon! I know you've got it in you! |

Where I come from most people are descended from French, Irish or Scottish, and English. A lot of the surnames are of the same. It's according to which region of America you are talking about. Up North, you might have more Russian, Polish, etc.., but not down South. So, different regions different immigrants. By the way, you are stereotyping 300 million people. I don't think that MOST Americans are loud, fat and brash just like I know that most British aren't whimps with bad teeth.

I think the Americans with Eastern European heritage are different from those with British heritage.
We call each other cousins which suggest that Britain is an Aunt. I've heard an American accent (New York, probably) described as a Dorset accent with a nasal whine. |
