I want to travel from Hungary to Turkey in June and I'm trying to work out the cheapest way to do this. Train is probably easiest but rail passes seem very expensive - can anyone suggest any alternatives? Thanks.

in Romania, around the country is cheaper to travel by bus or rent a car :)if you are more then one person you can all split the expenses,
train it is expensive. in big cities you can even walk a lot, places are not that far away between them.but let's say Bulgaria I heard bad stuff going on lately, and I would travel if necessary accompanied by somebody from there or by air plain :( in Hungary it is like Romania, Poland and Slovakia I guess the same. never been to Croatia, I don't know.... |

I am not SO sure that train will be cheaper than flying. Everyone thinks this, but it is not always the case anymore. Also a train ride will take over 30 hours and will require a transfer in Beograd, so it is not going to be an easy trip.
There are alot of discount airlines in Europe these days and often you can fly between two points much cheaper than going with train or bus. In addition, both the national airlines, Malev and Turkish airlines fly direct. Check their websites and compare. Also look into discount airlines. You may not always get a direct flight with disocunt airlines, but sometimes you can get flights for just a few Euros if you book them early enough. For example a flight between London and Budapest on EasyJet is about $60, London to Istanbuhl is about $80. Total cost would be about $140. Look at several discount airlines and maybe you can do better. Then compare this cost with a direct flight on Malev or Turkish airlines. My guess is that flying will be an easier trip than a bus or train and alot cheaper. |
