I am an American male 6'3 and a pretty good traveler (I can live out of my back pack no problem, and when i travel I tend not to dress up too fancy or anything)... I wanted to backpack by myself throughout eastern europe... do you think its safe? Any particular places you recommend I avoid, or any advice you have? Any information you have to give is appreciated

I'm a 5' 1" female and I've done it - so you should be safe. Avoid hitch-hiking (condsidered strange in many parts) and I would not recommend Trans-Dniester as a destination - although it seems fascinating given the politics etc.
Learn some basic Russian for Russia and Ukraine and the Baltic states but don't use it in Hungary! St Petersburg, Kiev, Budapest and Prague are not to be missed. And Krakow, too. In the Baltics, Riga and Tallinn are great - but Vilnius not much to write home about, in my experience. |

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html Most of the countries are relatively safe, except a few that have political strife, there were some places I wanted to bolt out of town most of it was being a Black woman and encountering people who have never seen a black person up close before or not often. Your are brave if you are going by yourself, you might want to investigate how much food you want to bring with you (Body flora is always a problem) |

I was thinking back upon my experiences with group travel and all of the things I had wished I and the others in the group had adhered to. It's true that traveling abroad brings out personalities in people of which you might have been previously unaware. The rigors of travel, adjusting to a new environment, not to mention the serious cluelessness and inability to grasp basic cultural concepts, can put anyone in a cranky mood.
Alot of eastern european states are beautiful! I've never experienced backpacking alone (at least there's nobody to drag you down) However, just be very careful - respecting the culture and laws of the country you’re in is a definite MUST! |

don't go to Belarus-no way, everywhere else is good, especially thos in the EU. Food will be extremely cheap and very good quality in Russia. St petersburg only has one hostel, right next to Mayakovskaya metro staqtion, but it is clean and safe. If you get the chance, check out Nizhny Novgorod, it is supposed to be awesome and relaxed. Right by Moscow. PS ONLY GO IN SUMMER UNLESS YOU ARE NUTS
