Stay in hostels, travel by train. Oh, and don't eat too much gelato...it's hard to resist, though, so be warned.

Not sure if you're asking about a general tourist trip or a backpacking adventure across Europe, but I've had good luck with VirtualTourist.com for reviews and info from both the people who have visited various locations as well as info from people who actually live there.

I also love visiting the forums and articles at Frommer's Budget Travel website. It has info for all types of travelers on a budget.

buy the plane ticket EARLY! (months early)

invest in a eurorail pass (multiple countries) and sleep overnight on the train, when you wake up the next morning...get off and explore the town you're in!

I'm in Europe right now and the one thing that really saves money is NOT going out to eat, but rather..go to the grocery store and buy some bread and cheeses and make your own food.

Definitely buy a Eurorail pass. It's a train ticket that will get you on any trains in the European Union. It's the most cost-effective way to get around Europe. If you're traveling on a budget, you should get the Let's Go travel guide or Lonely Planet. They have the best options for budget travelers. I would advise against going to London, too expensive, any other country besides Denmark, is reasonably priced. If you're going to Amsterdam, check out the Flying Pig hostal. There are 2 of them, one in the Red Light district, the other near Leidsplein (main drag in Amsterdam). Have fun!

I was in Spain last summer for three weeks. I was there taking a Spanish class. What I did to save money was to not eat out every meal. Europe is known to have small cafes that you can get very good sandwiches for very cheap. It probably only cost me about 3 US dollars to eat lunch everyday. These sandwiches aren't like American sandwiches, they are a lot better. They beat any sandwich shop I had ever eaten at, so you aren't doing without by any means. Sorry so much info about sandwiches, haha.

Another thing is if you are planning on going all over Europe, you can get a EURO pass for the train to certain countries as well. If you plan out your trip before you go, you can pick like 5 countries that your pass is good for and its only about $150-$200 dollars.

Another really cool thing that Europe has is hostels. It is a cheap place to stay that might not be the nicest places to stay but for what you are paying, they are 5 start hotels.

There are travel stations in every major city in Europe that gives really good deals to certain tourist attractions as well. That will really save you money as well.
