hostels - you are often in a "dorm" type room with people you don't know and you share a bathroom. Sometimes you are asked to do a small chore. The overnight fee is often as low as $10 per person.

Try youth hostels or YMCA. Homeless shelters?

Cheapest -- sleep in the car
Cheap -- stay in a tent in a campground... KOA is often the most expensive campgrounds... look for state parks and such.
Cheap -- Hostels, tho they aren't very common in the USA.

Besides that, Motel 6 is usually the cheapest chain. And there are even cheaper motels to be found, if you're brave.

tent,

seriously, try camping,

or just look for discount hotels, if you are looking for specific hotel names/locations you need to be more specific about where you are going.

Hostels. Depending on your ability to share a room with quiet a few strangers, they are usually the best bargain.

If you want to travel cheap in the US but you also want to be able to plan in advance and book reservations camp ground are usually the best bets. The money you save by cooking out instead of going to restaurants is probably as significant as the lodging costs. If you don't mind sleeping in a tent state parks are usually the least expensive and most states have websites where you can search for parks along your rout. Keep a close eye on weather forecasts if you plan to stay in a tent.

If you don't want to sleep in a tent then look for a campground with cabins. Some state parks have them and even places like KOA usually have an option at about half the price of a hotel. Cabins usually have beds, sometimes have AC and campgrounds usually have shower facilities. Groups of people can save really big. I once put a trip together with 10 friends and we all had comfortable accommodations for about $12 a night.

To play it safe, book a cabin and a tent site then check the weather forecast before the deadline for canceling reservations.
