I would estimate $1500-$2000 AUST.,so long as you are prepared to use the Metro, and stick to walking where possible.
Or do a a friend did, buy a cheap 2nd hand bike and use it during your stay. Then sell it back before you leave. Remember Cairo traffic is frenetic to put it mildly, but if you are game enough its a great idea! You need to budget for bottled water and you will need at least 4-5lts a day on top of other drinks. Don't skimp, and use local water or you will end up sick. This is very important,I'm a frequent traveller to Egypt and still buy bottled water. On that budget it will allow you to see about 3 historical sites a week. they are around 20L.E. each. That is what you will pay for real budget accommodation per night. At that price don't expect much! You may also leave with a few "friends" you will have to quickly get rid of! Decent budget accommodation is listed in The Lonely Planet guide. for a budget traveller this is a very good investment, even if you by the 2005 edition at a 2nd hand book store.Actually there is little difference in the prices of hotels at all, they have not gone up for the last 4 years. But book ahead if possible it is always cheaper that way. Desk front check ins, often find the prices have "gone up". To go to the pyramids you will have to go by bus its means catching 4 different buses ,but it is doable. Otherwise go to Giza by Metro and get a taxi. It is not far from there and should cost no more than 5L.E one way.Or you can walk, but do it early in the morning. Take your ATM card and don't worry about changing money. As you know every time you do that, you loose money. You can use ATM debit cards at every major bank in Egypt, then you have a receipt to check how your budget is going! If you are going inter city go by train. you will not be allowed on the cheapest class but the tourist class is cheap enough, just bring your own toilet paper and a scalf to tie over your mouth and nose. A pair of rubber boots is also handy, if you decide to bring them! Doing any country on a budget is an adventure. You just have to be prepared for anything, and not let the "stranger bits" get to you. I promise you there will be plenty of those! But you will also likely meet up with some other budget travellers and see more of the real Egypt than a first class tourist would ever see. Take it as it comes and have fun. |

we just came back from Alexandria, spent one month on the beach, renting a spacious chalet facing the sea with full access to a very clean beach. The food we ordered delivery of the best grilled meats and soups (Plave called Hosni) I lived in luxury by the beach for a full month in the winter and spent less than 2000.00 CDN. It could have been much cheaper but that was luxury living in Al-Mamoura, a very prestigious beach and everything there is priced higher. 2000 Cdn is not too much for 2 people (my wife and I) but we stayed in Alexandria and went to Cairo one day only for the pyramids.
Was fun |
