If either of the boys are 2 years or less, you can hold (lap baby) and save the cost of one flight. If older than 2. you will need to take or "rent" car seats for them and it will cost the same as an adult seat. It sounds like you might have your hands full...is there anyone that would be willing to travel with you to help you out? The airline personnel are helpful, but don't depend on them. They may be busy with their regular duties. If you need assistance booking flights, contact me. I will be glad to help you out where I can.

I have an autistic son (12 years), and while the airlines don't offer discount coupons, you can go to sites like priceline.com, orbitz.com, travelocity.com, and on and on (there's a bunch of them) that offer deals on last minute travel. Warning about priceline, if you do the name your own price deal with them, frequently the flights are in the middle of the night, and possibly not your best choice travelling solo with 2 autistic boys. You'll just have to do some searching online for the best deals. Read over all conditions and stipulations first before buying, air travel is where reading the fine print is mandatory.
Make sure you prepare the kids for travelling, do a social story so that they know what to expect. Make sure you bring food for them, since they probably won't like what the airline provides in the way of snacks. Also, we travel with a prescription of valium for our son, just in case. One time we were flying to visit my parents (2 1/2 hour flight) and he just flat refused to get on the plane. He was 7, and making such a commotion that the airline wouldn't allow us to board, fearing he'd be a danger in the air that the flight attendants couldn't handle. We went home, I called the psych, who prescribed the valium for him. He does much better now, but you never know with our spectrum kids! Just remember to prepare them for the change. Please email me if you have any more questions. Good luck! |

I worked for an airline and unfortunately there are no discounts for handicapped people nor do airlines work on coupons. Booking this close to departure you are not going to find any discounts at all. You'll pay close to full fare.
When you check in at the airport, tell the ticket agent that they have autism and fx syndrome so that they can document the record. Check in at the gate and ask for pre-boarding. That way they can get accustomed to the airplane and not have 200 people behind them and making them nervous. When I worked for Delta, I had 2 little boys flying with their grandmother to Ireland. She explained to me that they were both autistic and would need some extra time. So, since the flight arrived early, I took them all onboard and let them be on the plane the entire time it was being serviced so that they could have as much time as they needed to get adjusted. You may not be able to in San Juan, but again, just explain you will need some extra time to allow them time to adjust. You can save a lot if you fly in to Philedelphia and you have non-stop options. This will help with the kids as well. The fares are actually half what you would pay flying into Harrisburg and its only 114 miles from Philly, the cost difference will supplement the cost of gas to get to Harrisburg. Shoot me an e-mail with your travel dates and I'll let you know what I came up with. Just using Monday-Monday departure/returns to Harrisburg it was $1003 per person. Flying to PHL is $1539 for all 3 to travel if you purchase on Orbitz. American's website was over $2500. |
