You need a letter giving the other family permission to take you out of the U.S. It must be signed by both parents unless only one has full legal and physical custody, and it must be notarized. If your parents do not live in the sme city, each can provide a letter. You will also need to carry your birth certificate.

Yes, you will need both of your parents to sign a letter authorizing you to cruise with your friends. Here is a sample letter and more information ...

I would also suggest that the parents discuss practical concerns, e.g. expectations for behavior, what to do in case of an emergency, etc. I've just been reading about a case in which two 19-year-olds [whom one would hope would know better] got put off the ship, along with the mother of one of them, for misbehavior. The offender's parents/guardians refused to pay the expenses for the "child" to return home and great complications ensued. Better to be safe than sorry.

Make sure you have a passport. All cruise lines now require you to have a passport no matter where you are sailing out of. I just got back from a 2 week cruise and while we were in line before bording the ship they made us show them our passports.

Someone I worked with before I left for the cruise told me that the last cruise they went on there were people who got to the ship the first day of the cruise with all their luggage and they didn't have a passport so they could not board the ship.

I have a teenage son and we have brought a friend of his with on two separate occasions on a cruise. You will need a ssport (if you are a U.S citizen), unless you are going out of a port who's registry is the US (which doesn't mean where their port is). The only one I know of is Hawaii, but there may be others. If you are not a US citizen, I don't know how things work for you. You will also need a notarized note from both parents stating that it is ok for you to go on that cruise on those dates. It is ok to have two different letters, one from each parent. If one parent has sole custody and you only have one letter, you may have to show proof. I have to have my ex husband, my son's father, who he never sees, sign and have notarized a letter every year so he can go on vacation with my husband and I. Have a great time. It is not that big of a deal to get those.
