We will be traveling from San Diego into Mexico via cruiseline, do the kids need passports? I have one but kids do not. How long does it take to get passports and how much is the cost, should i get them even if they do not need them?

You need passports to get into Mexico- period. Your kid might be able to stay on the boat but that's no fun. You can go to the US post office (certain branches in each state/city) and fill out your form there. You need their birth certificate and 2 photos with you (and money- $89 I think). They have a rush process that you pay more for ($139 I think) and they'll get that to you in about 4 weeks.

Check with the cruiseline. When we took a cruise to Jamaica and Grand Caymen we weren't required to have a passport because of the fact that we boarded the ship in Florida...we only had to have our birth certificate and social security card.
But, the rules might have changed since then so just call the cruiseline and ask - they will know! :) |

Yes, anyone trying to return the US via cruise ship or airplane from Mexico, Canada and territories of the US will be required to have one upon return. It is not required for foot or car traffic over the border yet.
It can take a long time. I know some folks that took 10 weeks. Many are quicker, but don't be the one! |
