What going-away present to buy a girl who is going off traveling to Central America? Something handy.?

Not too expensive either, few of us chipped in at work.

A few hints:
*A well known brand of sun protection cream. Like Clinique or Clarins
*Small umbrella
*Flip flops

If she will be traveling and not just going to one location, maybe a small to medium backpack.
Bug Spray. A long cotton skirt. A gift certificate at a hiking store so she can buy hiking boots. A nice heavy flashlight. Can double as weapon.

Head torches are handy and light when travelling, also a swiss army knife is extremely useful.

a mosquito net, poncho, flashlight: alot of the countries have frequent power outages, bug spray with at least 25% DEET, hiking boots, sunscreen, knife, immodium and pepto bismol. just to name a few......good luck!
