Hi !
According to the US Embassy in Mexico City, in 2006, 250 million people legally crossed into the USA from Mexico border points. This works out to 685,000 people daily, though I am sure on holidays the results can be different (the lines get really, really long). Since these are legal crossings, it's a good assumption that the same amount are entering Mexico from the US side. Estimates for undocumented (illegal) crossings into the US previously from the Mexican border are about 1.4 million per year, which is far, far less than the legal crossings. That works out to about 4,000 illegal crossing on average per day (it adds up). 1.2 million undocumented travelers were apprehended during the last year and it is widely believed that this represents only 25% of the undocumented inflow. So the illegal flow by this measure is about 13,000 daily. Either way, the undocumented flow on a daily basis is relatively small and the total number of crossings, legal or not, would be around 700,000 into the US and 685,000 into Mexico, though some overstay legal entries into the US and the into Mexico number would be up to 10,000 less. So I'd go with the final numbers, Into US 695,000 daily Into Mexico 682,000 daily The numbers are just my guesses, but the information is very contradictory out there and this would give a net inflow of about 5 million annually which seems close enough to reality for government work. The wikipedia article on the Mexican border crossing is wrong. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S.-Mexico_border It currently says 350 million people cross illegally every year. That's funny, there are only 107 million people in all of Mexico, and 300 million in the USA and undocumented people don't cross back and forth too much :-) I'd stick with the US Embassy info. Hope that answers the question. Good Luck! |
